Letter P.A.L.S. is a FREE online K-3rd grade school-to-home reading
program, which is offered during Fall and Winter Sessions. Each session
is 8 weeks in length. The Winter Session begins on January 22, 2007, and the Fall Session begins on October 1, 2007. Letter P.A.L.S. was created to provide a
dynamic way to help teachers, parents, and guardians motivate children to become
strong readers.
Each session of the Letter P.A.L.S. school-to-home reading program
consists of 8 different online Pet Shop Pen Pals letters, which are
delivered one at a time on Mondays of each week over a 8-week session period,
at the Readers Are Winners web site. Every weekly letter is personalized with
each child's name, is three pages in length, professionally written, beautifully
illustrated, and reviewed by reading specialists for use in a shared/guided
reading environment. You can learn more about the Pet Shop Pen Pals by clicking
on the Pet Shop Pen Pals section.
When you sign up your classroom, you will be assigned a unique classroom
identification number. Three weeks prior to the program start date
(January 22, 2007 - Winter Session and October 1, 2007 - Fall Session), notify
your students' parents/guardians to sign up under your classroom identification
number. An official Parent
Notification Letter has been drafted for you and can be found in your login
section. All you have to do is print one off, sign the letter, make the appropriate
number of copies, and send them home with your students.
Every Monday, starting on January 22, 2007 - Winter Session / October 1, 2007 - Fall Session, a new personalized letter will be made available
for the parents/guardians and students to read together online during the 8-week
session. As a means to provide you with parent/guardian accountability,
a unique feature to each letter called "Parents Paws for Reading"
has been added. It follows the third page of each letter and includes specific
questions and answers for each weekly letter, in order to bring as much meaning
to each weekly reading experience. After they finish, the parent/guardian clicks
on the Readers are Winners button. Automatically, a small paw print is placed
for that student for that specific week on your very own online classroom Paws
for Reading Chart. Anytime you log in, you will be able to see your
classroom chart. This will allow you a quick and easy way to monitor the level
of weekly participation in each home.
